United Through Reading, a nonprofit that unites separated families including those serving in our Armed Forces, by offering parents the opportunity to be recorded on DVD reading storybooks to their children at home from over 200 recording locations around the world, will host the “Storybook Ball,” at the Hyatt Regency La Jolla at Aventine on Sunday, November 15.
Because of United Through Reading, moms and dads are reading aloud to their children from desert camps in
Iraq
and
Afghanistan
and from US Navy ships and USO locations all over the world. Parents who are incarcerated or in drug treatment programs have the same opportunity.
At the Storybook Ball, guests will celebrate the organization’s 20th anniversary by enjoying a sumptuous meal, fine wine and music by Bunnell Strings, a string quartet. A silent auction and live auction will also be held. Auction items include the chance to bid on naming a character in an upcoming James Patterson novel, passes to the US Open at
Pebble
Beach
and dinner with pro golfer Rory Sabbatini.
United Through Reading Founder Betty Mohlenbrock will be honored as will Navy Lt. Florence Bacong Choe, a United Through Reading active duty coordinator who died in
Afghanistan
in March.
Honorary Chair of the event is best-selling author James Patterson who will provide a videotaped welcome. The black tie event is sponsored by Target; TriWest Healthcare Alliance; BAE Systems; SAIC; Dr. and Mrs. Andrew Viterbi; Mrs. Audrey Geisel and the Dr. Seuss Fund at the San Diego Foundation. Cost is $200 per person. Proceeds will benefit United Through Reading programs. For more information call (858) 481-7323 or email development@unitedthroughreading.org.
